Cherry blossoms
Tokyo's cherry blossoms (the benchmark tree at Yasukuni Shrine) open on March 24 and reach full bloom on March 31 in an average year. In 2026 they were early, opening on March 19 and in full bloom on March 28. Forecasts for 2027 are published from the new year.
Holidays & crowds
March 21 (Sun) is the Vernal Equinox Day and March 22 (Mon) a substitute holiday, making March 20–22 a three-day weekend. School spring break overlaps with cherry blossom season, so famous viewing spots get crowded. The Tokyo Marathon on March 7 closes roads across central Tokyo.
