FAQ

What are the opening hours for Hatsumode?

In 2026 the grounds were open around the clock over New Year. Goma fire prayers in the Main Hall start at midnight on January 1 and at 6:00 AM on other days, with closing times that vary by day. The temple treats everything up to Hatsu-Fudo on January 28 as the Hatsumode season. The 2027 hours will be updated once announced.

Are there road closures?

In 2026 the main approach from JR and Keisei Narita stations to the Somon gate and nearby streets, plus the road east of the gate (Tsuchiya – Narita International Culture Hall – Narita High School), were closed to cars from 9:00 PM on December 31 to 7:00 PM on January 1, and from about 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM on January 2 and 3 (adjusted for crowds). From January 4 to 31 the closures were smaller: Narita Kankokan to the gate from 10 AM to 7 PM on the 4th, then 10 AM to 4 or 5 PM depending on the day.

Is there parking?

The temple has no visitor car park; use the paid private and city car parks nearby (on the 2026 guide map, for example, the city Higashi-Wada car park with about 500 spaces and Narita International Culture Hall with about 400). They tend to stay full on January 1–3, and the temple recommends coming by train.

How do I get there by car?

Leave the Higashi-Kanto Expressway at Narita IC, take Route 295 and head for the Teradai interchange. From the Ken-O Expressway, change to the Higashi-Kanto Expressway at Taiei JCT and exit at Narita IC. Head back toward Chiba and Tokyo via Narita IC.

How do I get there by train?

It is about a 15-minute walk along the main approach from JR Narita or Keisei-Narita Station (longer when crowded). In 2026 JR ran extra limited express trains, the Keisei Main Line ran all night on New Year's Eve, and the special "Naritasan Kaiun-go" train ran on January weekends and holidays.

When is it most crowded?

According to the 2026 guidance, the peaks are around midnight on January 1 and 11 AM – 1 PM on January 1–3, and entry may be restricted on New Year's Eve and January 1–3. Crowds continue until about January 12, so the temple encourages visiting any time in January.
